Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence from eating meat.  Fasting for this day consists of one full meal and it is required of all between the ages of 18 and 58.

Days of abstinence: All Fridays in Lent

All who have reached their 14th year of age are bound to abstain totally from meat.  The American Bishops recommend that abstinence from meat be observed by all Catholics as a sign of unity with each other during Lent.  If a person cannot observe this discipline then another personal act of penance should be performed in Lent.
